When the the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission met Thursday to hear public comment on the future of the Sherco coal plant in Becker, members were preparing to make a decision that will determine the economy in Sherburne County and the future price of electric rates for every Minnesotan.

Last year, the PUC required a study from Xcel Energy examining the costs of continued operation of units 1 and 2 at Sherco. The report determined the best option to meet the needs of Minnesotans for safe, reliable and affordable energy was to continue burning coal at both units.
